FOOD INSECURITY

No one should have to choose between food and shelter

According to the USDA, food insecurity is defined as the lack of consistent access to enough food for a healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods.

All too often, people have to sacrifice food or medical needs in order to cover the cost of housing. Second Harvest Food Bank reports that approximately 1 in 7 Central Floridians and 1 in 5 children are food insecure. That means more than 500,000 of our neighbors do not know where their next meal will come from.

Because everyone should have access to nutritious, fresh food, ORRF works with community gardens and food banks to help improve access to healthy, nutritious fruits and vegetables for food desert communities and those in need.

We also support local food pantries, safety net programs, and other food-related outreach initiatives through food packing events, volunteer initiatives, and other contributions.
